The UCL Machine Learning Group

The UCL Machine Learning Group was founded in 2003 by Profs. Verleysen, Dupont, Saerens and Wertz, and by researchers coming from four departments of the UCL: Applied Mathematics, Computing Science and Engineering, Information Systems and Electrical Engineering. The aim of the group is to bring together researchers working on fundamental and applied aspects of artificial learning.

MLG researchers deal with datasets coming from various domains including: biomedical, commercial and geographical data; image, sound and text processing; food quality control, etc. This discipline is known, in computer science and other domains, as "Machine Learning", "Data Mining" or "Knowledge Discovery in Databases". The group studies the following topics:

Applications of the MLG research results cover various domains, often in collaboration with experts or industrials: genome analysis, text and image analysis, food quality control with spectra, electrical load forecasting, financial data prediction, biochemical networks analysis and pattern matching, study of firm growth trajectories, etc.

The group has developed an expertise and plays a major role in the international scientific community about a number of techniques including: nonlinear statistical tools, artificial neural networks, probabilistic automata, hidden Markov models, formal grammar and finite-state automata induction, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, support vector machines, etc.

The "Machine Learning Group" is willing to be a meeting point between scientific concerns related to the development of innovative data analysis tools, and the needs of users and industrials. The group also organizes seminars, lectures and an annual international scientific conference.
